Get hands on with History!
Hadrian’s Wall is one of the best places in England for youngsters to learn about Roman History.
If you want to give them a real Roman experience, then the attractions and events along the Wall will offer the most enlightening and inspiring Roman days out you can ever wish for.
Take Arbeia where children of all ages can get their hands dirty excavating in Time Quest. At nearby Segedunum (take the Metro between the two, it’s a lot more fun), the interactive displays bring the story of the Roman frontier to life and you can step back in time onto a reconstructed section of the wall itself.
Over at the Roman Army Museum, Centurion Quintus Petronius will tell you all about how to join the Roman Army and the Eagle Eye film soars skywards.
During school holidays English Heritage attractions along Hadrian’s Wall have a range of hands-on Roman related activities for your little soldiers to take part in. Find out more at: Chesters Roman Fort, Housesteads Roman Fort, Birdoswald Roman Fort, Corbridge Roman Town and Carlisle Castle.
Getting them outside
Hire a bike, or even a pony if horse-riding is your thing, and get some fresh air racing past those cheeks. The South Tyne Trail begins and ends in Haltwhistle, and is just one of the many do-in-a-day cycle trips.
