Description

ROUTE OVERVIEW Start/Finish: Ravenglass SD 085 964 Distance: 22km (9.5m) medium distance and moderate hills Maps: OS Landranger 96 (Barrow-in-Furness & South Lakeland) and OS Landranger 89 (West Cumbria) Ravenglass is a small coastal village with a natural harbour. In Roman Britain it was the site of the fort Glannoventa and the bath house is one of the tallest surviving Roman structures in northern Britain. It is also the start point of Hadrian's Cycleway which follows the coast north before heading inland across the Pennines. This route explores the steep valley before heading back along the coastal plain and by the beach. The route can be shortened using the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway, a superb way of making this route easier for everyone to enjoy.
