Chesters Roman Fort

Remains of the baths and steam room, footings for the Roman bridge that once spanned the river and the beautifully restored Victorian museum of Roman finds from across Hadrian’s Wall – a museum of a museum and a fascinating insight into the way Victorians viewed the world. Guarding the nearby bridge across the river Tyne, Chesters Roman Fort is the best preserved Roman cavalry fort in Britain, once garrisoned by a regiment from Spain.

The fort at Chesters has a beautiful setting by the river Tyne and is wheelchair accessible.

The site is run by English Heritage. Light refreshments, books and souvenirs are available at the visitor centre.

New for 2015: The brand new Chesters Tearoom opens its doors to visitors from Saturday 28 March. Serving up hot and cold food and refreshments, the tearoom is a charming stop off for weary legs, and a beautiful spot for an afternoon treat (or two!)
