Traditional industries such as coal mining, ship building and shipping shaped the town's important maritime heritage and the Georgian architecture in the town reflects the industrial successes. Thomas Henry Ismay, owner of the White Star Line (which built the Titanic) was born in Maryport, and the town also has connections to the Hine Brothers who founded the Holme Shipping Line, and the Ritsons who constructed the first iron ships at Maryport. Find out more at Maryport Maritime museum.
Today the town has an attractive working harbour and marina, and family friendly attractions like the Lake District Coast Aquarium and 'Clip 'n' Climb' (opening May 2013). There is also a contemporary entertainment venue, the Wave Centre, and a lively events programme including the popular Maryport Blues Festival.
